Carlyle's Works, Boston Edition, 10 Volume Complete Set from The 1800's
10 volume set of the works of Thomas Carlyle printed in the 1800's. These hardcover books are bound in maroon red cloth. On the spine, the title, volume number are in black and gilt. On the title page of each volume, it lists "Carlyle's Complete Works Illustrated", but there are very few illustrations, just a couple of maps and portraits. This set is the Boston edition published by John W.
The top page edges are gilded. The books are in good condition considering their age, with clean pages and intact bindings. There is wear to the spines, and a couple of the books have significant chipping to the black/gold titles/author name on the spines.In a couple of the books a previous owner left a piece of paper or newsprint, possibly as a bookmark, and the page underneath has tanned considerably in the shape of the bookmark. There is a large dent on the edge of the front cover of Volumes I and IV. The cover of Volume V has mottled. Please see photos carefully for condition.
