John L Stoddards Lectures 1923 Beautiful Set 14 Volumes EARLY 1900s TRAVEL BOOKS
This 1923 edition of John L. Stoddard's 1901 Lectures is a handsome set comprising Volumes 1-10 and 4 Supplements (Volume 11, 13, 14, 15).
The covers of all the books in the set show no wear or minimal wear. It's hard to believe that they were published in 1923 due to their wonderful condition. All book covers are unfaded, consistent in color. The one exception is that Volume 7 has some creasing to the back cover (see photo #5).
Interior endpapers are marbled and unmarked, unstained. The top textblock of each book is gold gilded as seen in photo 6. Some of the Volumes have age related storage issues (mostly edge related water staining) as described in the following section. (This staining has not affected the text, photographs, or color of the pages-just the border margins as shown in the last photo and there are no musty smells).All are In readable condition and are profusely illustrated with rich text and black and white photographs (with some occasional color tinted photos). Better quality paper was used and pages are in crisp, clean condition and have minimally yellowed. All bindings are tight, there are no markings or soiled pages, spines are straight, there are no odors. Virtually no wear to the covers. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING DETAILS OF EACH VOLUME.
Volume 1 - Norway/Switzerland/Athens/Venice - Water staining to the top up to ca. 2 pages (approximately first half of book). Does not affect text/photos - only border margins. Volume 2 - Constantinople/Jerusalem/Egypt is in excellent condition.
Volume 3 - Japan/China - Water staining to the top up to ca. 2 and side up to ca. 1/3 pages (approximately first half of book). Text/photos not affected - only border margins. Volume 4 - India/The Passion Play - water staining on most top/side pages (up to 2) approximately first half of book with moderate/heavy water staining/wrinkling to remaining section of book.
Volume 5 - Paris/LaBelle/France/Spain - Overall fine condition with minimal water staining up to ca. 1 to lower right corner (pages 302-366) - border margin only - not to text/photos. Petersburg/Moscow - Some light border (top/side) margin (not text/photo areas) water staining up to ca. Volume 7 - The Rhine/Belgium/Holland/Mexico - very light water staining up to ca. 1 top right border only (not photos/text) first three quarters of book with some moderate /heavy water staining/wrinkling in last quarter of book (section on Mexico). Photos and text are readable. Volume 8 - Florence/Naples/Rome - some mechanical damage to central right side margin - up to 1 - (text/photos not affected) - pages 271-366. Volume 9 - Scotland/England/London - Extremely light water staining (up to 1/3) to lower border margin (text/photos not affected). Otherwise this volume is in excellent condition. Volume 10 - California/Grand Canyon/Yellowstone Park - Extremely light water staining (up to 1/2) to lower right corner margin (text/photos not affected) - last 20 pages. Otherwise the volume is in excellent condition. Volume 11 Supplement - Ireland/Denmark/Sweden - Overall excellent condition. Volume 12 Supplement - Missing this supplement volume.Volume 13 Supplement - South Tyrol Around Lake Garuda/The Dolomites - Overall excellent condition. Volume 14 Supplement - Sicily/Genoa/The Engadine - Overall excellent condition.
Volume 15 Supplement - Lake Como/The Danube/Bohemia - Overall excellent condition. These simulated leather, hardcover books were published by Geo. (Norwood Press) in Norwood, Mass and bound by Bidton Bookbinding Co. This unique set of early 1900s illustrated travel books is a must-have for any book collector and is a rare find.The set weighs 25 pounds. The books measure 9 x 6 x 1. They have been stored in a dust, smoke free, environmentally friendly home for the last 25 years or more.
